Executive Underwriter

Overview

Zurich Energy is hiring an experienced Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director
- Primary Casualty to join our Energy Casualty team. This role offers an opportunity to apply and hone underwriting, marketing and leadership skills while leveraging relationships with key distribution partners. The team is primarily based in Houston, with qualified talent across the country considered. A travel requirement of 15-20% is expected for targeted marketing, business development, and client engagement events.

This role will be filled at either the Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based on the selected applicant’s experience and the qualifications listed for this position.

• Market facing and production, including onsite client stewardship and broker visits
• Management and development of robust new business and cross-sell pipeline
• Serve as a customer advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering the best end-to-end solution for their insurance needs
• Deliver a disciplined and thorough approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, pricing, and documentation
• Use risk insights, data and models to drive informed underwriting decisions at point of sale
• Develop and define program structure recommendations, including loss-sensitive solutions based on risk characteristics
• Prepare and present comprehensive referrals, as necessary
• Work independently to negotiate and deliver successful outcomes to the agent/broker
• Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, and applicable insurance laws and regulations
• Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments
• Manage key portfolio indicators within the assigned territory, including Gross Written Premium, Retention, Rate, and Profitability
• Mentor and coach early-career team members
• Maintain visibility at industry events and contribute to long-term strategy development and vision

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market-facing areas; OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support
• Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an associate degree with relevant experience
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Experience meeting time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
• Experience working in a team environment

• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years of experience in underwriting or market-facing areas; OR
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree with relevant experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Ability to work within time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
• Experience working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

• Bachelor’s Degree
• Energy Casualty or casualty-driven underwriting experience, including guaranteed cost and loss-sensitive
• Existing network within the Energy Casualty brokerage and client community
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Sales execution mindset
• Creative problem-solving skills
• Microsoft Office experience

Your pay at Zurich is based on role, location, skills, and experience. The pay range shown is a national average and may vary by location. The combined salary range for this position is $98,500.00 - $. The proposed salary ranges are:
Executive Underwriter $98,500.00 - $ (with 15% Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility) and AVP $ - $ (with 20% Global Specialty Incentive Plan bonus eligibility). We offer bonuses and merit increases where applicable.
