The RoleThis trainee will assist the MESU Transportation Materials Technician 3 with testing and inspection of construction materials and structures.
Duties include:
testing soils, aggregates, and other materials; performing field and laboratory inspections; and supporting evolving unit and section needs.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)Individuals in this class receive on‑the‑job training to perform basic technical work in support of transportation projects.
Examples of DutiesPerforms a variety of duties that become more advanced as skills are acquired during the training period.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability- Knowledge of basic construction methods and materials
- Skill in using construction equipment, instruments, and computer applications
- Ability to perform mathematical computations and create/interpret plans, specifications, and drawings
- Preparation of accurate construction drawings and reports
Two (2) years of experience inspecting transportation construction projects, testing transportation materials, or bridge safety inspection.
Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed- College training in construction management, engineering technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology, or a closely related field (15 semester hours = ½ year, up to 2 years for an Associate’s degree).
- Level II certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) in one of the following:
Transportation Construction Inspection, Construction Materials Testing, or Transportation Program (Highway Materials/Inspection or Bridge Safety Inspection).
- Independent field and/or laboratory visual inspection, sampling, and testing experience
- Experience with Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Outlook, data entry, graph creation)
- Mathematical computations and preparation of material testing and inspection reports
- Effective verbal and written communication with teammates and stakeholders
- Experience with construction project management software (e.g., AASHTOW, Project Construction & Materials)
- Knowledge of hydraulic cement concrete, proportioning, and production processes
- Certification as a Soils and Aggregate Laboratory Technician (NETTCP) and/or ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Grade I or equivalent
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required
- Travel may be required
- Must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual, and auditory acuity necessary to perform duties.
- Physical examination may be required.
Incumbents may be exposed to risk of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and discomfort from year‑round weather conditions.
