The Role

This position resides in the MESU where duties include assisting the Transportation Materials Technician 3 regarding inspection and testing of materials and structures used in the construction of transportation facilities. The position is based at the Rocky Hill Laboratory where duties include the testing and inspection of construction materials and their components. The current focus is the soil and aggregate area, with additional related roles as the Unit requires.

Responsibilities / Duties

Perform a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the training period.

  • Assist in inspection and testing of transportation construction materials and structures.
  • Conduct laboratory visual inspection, sampling, and testing of construction, maintenance, and other materials.
  • Prepare accurate drawings, scales, diagrams, plans, specifications, and construction materials related documents such as material testing reports and inspection reports.
  • Use construction related equipment, instruments, and computer applications.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Basic construction methods and materials, use of construction related equipment and instruments, computer applications, mathematical computations, interpretation of scales, diagrams, plans, specifications and drawings.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Two (2) years of experience involving the inspection of transportation construction projects, testing of transportation materials, or bridge safety inspection.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

College training in construction management, engineering technology, construction technology, civil engineering technology or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one‑half (½) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree. Possession of at least Level II certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) in one of the specified Civil Engineering Technology Programs may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience independently performing field and/or laboratory visual inspection, sampling, and testing of construction, maintenance, and other materials.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365, including Outlook, Excel, creating spreadsheets, inputting data, and creating graphs.
  • Experience performing mathematical computations and preparing construction materials related documents such as material testing reports and inspection reports.
  • Experience communicating verbally and in writing with teammates and stakeholders of varying levels.
  • Experience with construction project management software applications such as AASHTOW, Project Construction & Materials.
  • Experience with Hydraulic Cement Concrete components, proportioning, and production processes, including sampling, testing, and inspection activities.
  • Experience with concrete mixture components, proportioning, and basic production processes.
  • Possession of Soils and Aggregate Laboratory Technician Certification from the Northeast Transportation Training and Certification Program (NETTCP) and/or ACI Concrete Field‑Testing Grade I or…
