Role
Description:
This is a seasonal, part-time, on-site position for a Summer Camp Instructor in Rockville, MD. Instructors will support and lead engaging, age-appropriate lessons and activities for elementary and middle school students across a variety of camp offerings, including (but not limited to):
Academic Enrichment, Visual Arts, Crafts, Video Editing, STEM, Gymnastics, Drama, Public Speaking, LEGO-based programs, and more.
Instructors are responsible for creating a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment that promotes student confidence, participation, creativity, collaboration, and growth. Instruction should be hands-on, interactive, and adaptable to a range of skill levels through differentiation and scaffolded support.
Schedule (Typical Camp Day)Time: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Sample Schedule)
- 9:00 – 9:30 Lesson Preparation Time (staff/counselors lead arrival activities)
- 9:30 – 9:45 Morning Ice Breaker (orientation, warm-up, team building)
- 9:45 – 10:45 Lesson I
- 10:45 – 11:00 Snack Break
- 11:00 – 12:00 Lesson II
- 12:00 – 12:30 Recess / Relaxing Activities
- 12:30 – 1:15 Lunch
- 1:15 – 2:15 Lesson III
- 2:15 – 2:45 Snack Break
- 2:45 – 3:45 Lesson IV
- 3:45 – 4:00 Closure, Clean-Up & Check-Out
- Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons aligned to assigned camp theme(s)
- Lead hands-on projects, skill-building activities, and structured group learning experiences
- Differentiate instruction to support mixed ability levels and diverse learning needs
- Prepare materials, set up activities, and maintain organized learning spaces
- Monitor student progress, participation, and behavior; adjust instruction as needed
- Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment
- Supervise students during transitions, breaks, and check-out procedures
- Communicate effectively with program leadership and staff regarding student needs and daily outcomes
- Support a collaborative camp culture and contribute to a high-quality family experience
- Experience teaching, coaching, tutoring, facilitating, or leading youth programs (camp, classroom, enrichment, athletics, arts, etc.)
- Ability to lead groups confidently with clear expectations and strong classroom management
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills
- Enthusiasm, patience, reliability, and a positive, student-centered approach
- Content experience in one or more areas such as: academics/ELA/math, STEM, visual arts/crafts, video editing/media, LEGO/engineering, drama/theater, public speaking, gymnastics/fitness, or similar fields
- Teaching certification, education coursework, coaching certifications, or subject-matter specialization
- Prior summer camp or youth program leadership experience
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
