Overview
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated.
- Support behavioral interventions as required in identified MCPS schools/programs.

- Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range and MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, and research-based reading instruction.
- Multicultural education and assessments; knowledge of ESSA (2015) and IDEA (2004) and related policies.
- Ability to provide instructional support and to adapt instructional programs and materials.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
- Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered to meet the knowledge, abilities, and skills required.
- Certificate/Licensure:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.

Special Requirements:
Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to complete specific MCPS-provided courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and to support behavioral interventions in identified schools/programs.
