Description:
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
Physical Demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special Requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions.
Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
We are in need of a special education teacher to support the various needs of our student population. The potential candidate will be teaching English and Social Studies to our students. MCEA 10 Month:

Responsibilities- Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, and collaborate with general education teachers.
- Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
- Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as required by the MCEA agreement.
- Complete required courses provided by MCPS, including courses in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and support behavioral interventions in identified schools and programs.
- Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the relevant grade/content range and MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEPs, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
- Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials to students with disabilities; excellent communication skills; ability to work with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited college or university.
- Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment, or equivalent experience.
- Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary).
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
