Job Overview

The Reviewing Medical Officer (RMO) in the Law Enforcement and Surveillance (LE‑S) Case Review Program evaluates cases for federal agencies seeking medical clearance for safety‑sensitive positions, such as federal law enforcement officers and firefighters, as well as for surveillance related to occupational exposures. The RMO also reviews and provides recommendations for other types of occupational medicine evaluations related to LE‑S and provides expert medical consultation on law enforcement and surveillance programs for federal employees.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate cases for federal agencies in pursuit of medical clearance for safety‑sensitive positions.
  • Review and provide recommendations for occupational medicine evaluations related to law enforcement and surveillance.
  • Provide expert medical consultation on law enforcement and surveillance programs for federal employees.
  • Collaborate with team members, offering consultation and training to ensure high‑quality reviews and exceptional customer service.
  • Participate in Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation preparation and maintain medical records securely per TJC standards.
  • Maintain appointments, privileges, board certification, and licenses in accordance with FOH Credentialing, Privileging, and peer review policies.
  • Assist in continuous quality improvement assessments of various examination types reviewed in law enforcement and medical surveillance.
  • Perform occupational medical reviews, provide 100% accurate written and oral consultation determinations and recommendations to the customer.
  • Demonstrate excellent written communication skills and provide written and oral consultation determinations and recommendations.
  • Support the medical and consultative needs for one or more federal agencies.
  • Perform a mixture of administrative, clinical, and consultant responsibilities depending on the specific assignments and the needs of FOH in completing a case.
  • Perform medical consultation and complete reviews in accordance with FOH policy and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate a strong level of technical expertise in occupational and primary care medicine and provide consultation (and medical care when required) of the highest caliber.
  • Work and communicate effectively, particularly in high‑stress situations.
  • Possess strong technical knowledge regarding federal occupational safety and health regulations.
  • Provide assistance and consultative support to Examining Physicians when needed.
  • May be required to perform clinical duties in support of agency needs such as ordering and reviewing labs, client follow‑up, etc.
  • May conduct hands‑on examinations and render professional opinions regarding work clearances consistent with examination findings and established physical qualifications.
  • Monitor health of employees and employee populations enrolled in medical surveillance programs and conduct epidemiologic assessment when warranted.
  • Advise federal agency clients on development, management, and improvement of medical surveillance and certification programs.
  • Provide occupational and environmental medicine presentations to federal agency employee groups.
  • Perform annual reviews of agency existing medical programs and provide oversight as lead RMO.
  • Provide expert witness testimony as needed related to case reviews performed.
Qualifications
  • Must be a qualified medical or osteopathic physician with a current license to practice medicine.
  • Must be board‑certified in occupational medicine, aerospace medicine, or a primary‑care specialty (internal medicine or family medicine) with at least five years of experience in occupational medicine.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in an occupational clinic setting.
  • Expert understanding of federal safety and health regulations and experience in occupational health related to clearance and surveillance case reviews for safety‑sensitive jobs.
  • Experience consulting in occupational health.
