Examples Of Functions and TasksCurriculum Development – ESSENTIAL:
Review and evaluate curriculum to meet student interests and needs within divisional budget constraints; coordinate with part‑time instructors; ensure transferability of courses within CSU and UC systems; revise course descriptions to fit curriculum designs; present proposals for curriculum changes; make changes as approved within shared governance. PERIPHERAL:
Review curriculum for changes in laws, regulations, and standards.
Lecture/Laboratory Preparation – ESSENTIAL:
Order books, provide syllabi to bookstore; place reference items on reserve; prepare lesson plans; review and evaluate new textbooks; attend workshops and conferences; prepare handouts and transparencies; coordinate with book publishers; familiarize with equipment. PERIPHERAL:
Review and select computer and audio‑visual materials.
Lecture/Laboratory Presentation – ESSENTIAL:
Present information and concepts clearly; use analogies and examples; provide instructional objectives; use visual aids; prepare and distribute handouts; answer questions; promote participation; monitor activity; design new exercises; promote critical thinking; demonstrate lab techniques; assign homework and lab assignments. PERIPHERAL:
Clean boards and oversee classrooms after sessions.
Student Performance Evaluation – ESSENTIAL:
Develop quizzes, tests and examinations; monitor exam sessions; grade assignments; tabulate scores; advise students; refer to student services. PERIPHERAL:
Input scores into computer and provide printouts.
Shared Governance Participation – ESSENTIAL:
Attend departmental meetings; respond to requests; participate in curriculum development; serve on campus committees; assist in evaluation of part‑time faculty. PERIPHERAL:
Attend building meetings; serve on selection committees; attend trustees and council meetings.
Ancillary Student Services – ESSENTIAL:
Hold office hours; provide academic advice; serve as a role model; participate in graduation ceremonies. PERIPHERAL:
Provide recommendation letters; hold review sessions; advise on curriculum; provide trip and club opportunities.
Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism OR the equivalent.
Salary rates are based on the Part‑Time/Adjunct Salary Schedule. Degree and years of teaching experience determine step placement. Offer and acceptance of employment are subject to verification of all information provided, credentials, transcripts, Live Scan, and tuberculosis examination as required. Verification of prior teaching or work experience may be needed to determine that minimum qualifications are met.
