Ethnic Studies Instructor

Salary: $66,812.56 - $89,535.23 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time, Tenure-Track

Sierra College is committed to equity and inclusion. The Ethnic Studies Instructor will provide academic instruction in introductory Ethnic Studies courses, evaluate student performance, develop culturally responsive curriculum, and participate in shared governance and other instructional activities.

Responsibilities
  • Present course material in a clear, logical, and student-centered manner in both online and classroom settings.
  • Develop and provide student-centered syllabi, lesson plans, and coordinate lectures with laboratory or other interactive assignments.
  • Create quizzes, examinations, term papers, homework assignments, and projects that fairly evaluate student progress with an equity-minded approach.
  • Read, evaluate, and grade student responses, assign official grades, and communicate progress to students in a timely, student-centered manner.
  • Provide students with information about support services (e.g., EOPS, Learning Skills Center, Tutoring Center, Writing Center) and collaborate with Student Services professionals.
  • Post and hold regular student hours, incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, and mentor students.
  • Invite diverse guest speakers, arrange field trips, and promote articulation with feeder high schools and transfer universities.
  • Review and select learning resources such as textbooks and online sites, evaluate them for cost, readability, and equity-mindedness.
  • Review and evaluate curriculum and student success data, coordinate with faculty to enhance consistency, and present proposals for curriculum changes.
  • Attend District, division, and department meetings and serve on committees as requested.
  • Participate in professional development seminars and workshops to enhance core competencies.
  • Maintain accurate records, submit required materials, and meet scheduled obligations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s in African-American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies.
  • OR Master’s in Ethnic Studies.
  • Or the equivalent.
  • Verification of prior teaching or work experience may be required.
