Sierra College accepts applications in all subject areas and conducts interviews for teaching positions throughout the year. Applications are retained in the hiring pool for two years. ResponsibilitiesLecture / Laboratory Presentation - ESSENTIAL:
Prepare and deliver lectures introducing theory, problem‑solving techniques, and laboratory procedures for Calculus‑based and non‑Calculus‑based Physics courses. Structure courses to maintain a uniform pace and enforce classroom conduct standards and minimum academic performance. Convey material in a clear and logical manner, introduce necessary mathematical techniques, and prepare lecture demonstrations. Create slides and multimedia aids as needed, including videotapes of laboratory procedures.
Set up, verify, and maintain laboratory apparatus. Supervise students during laboratory periods and provide individual tutoring and counseling. PERIPHERAL:
Supervise maintenance, adjustment, and repair of apparatus.
Testing Instruments - ESSENTIAL:
Prepare, administer, and evaluate tests, quizzes, homework assignments, and makeup work for lecture classes. Prepare laboratory instructions and report forms; administer and evaluate laboratory quizzes; maintain class records and assign course grades.
Subject Matter Expertise - ESSENTIAL:
Enroll in courses, conferences, and workshops to review subject matter and modern teaching techniques. Undertake regular review of literature, journals, new apparatus, and software; correspond with colleagues on professional matters. PERIPHERAL:
Attend and present at in‑service workshops.
Departmental Operations - ESSENTIAL:
Direct departmental tutors, Laboratory Technicians, and other temporary help; manage departmental correspondence and phone inquiries; participate in department meetings; prepare class schedules, syllabi, purchase requisitions, and inventory. PERIPHERAL:
Liaise between Physics Department and the District on policies, budgeting, and student support.
Learning Improvement / Innovation - ESSENTIAL:
Incorporate up‑to‑date apparatus, computers, and techniques into curriculum; conduct research and development on instructional methods and apparatus; develop computer‑based lecture aids. PERIPHERAL:
Prepare multimedia aids such as slides and video tapes.
Articulation - PERIPHERAL:
Provide inter‑departmental loan service of equipment; present programs for other academic departments and for local elementary and secondary schools; assist in articulation of Physics curriculum with transfer institutions.
Master’s in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics OR Bachelor’s in Physics or Astronomy AND Master’s in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics OR equivalent. The position is part‑time faculty teaching assignment with salary rates outlined in the Part‑Time / Adjunct Salary Schedule. Offer and acceptance of employment is subject to verification of all information provided on the employment application, credentials, transcripts, Live Scan, and tuberculosis examination as required.
Verification of prior employment may be needed to determine if minimum qualifications are met.
Placement on the District’s Faculty Salary Schedule is dependent upon years of experience and level of education. Entry‑level is from $77.44 per hour (Lecture Rate) / $58.08 per hour (Lab/Counselor Rate) to $98.98 per hour (Lecture Rate) / $74.24 per hour (Lab/Counselor Rate) at the time of employment. Highest salary attainable after employment is $127.21 per hour (Lecture Rate) / $95.41 per hour (Lab/Counselor Rate).
Employees are members of the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS). Sick leave and other leave provisions are available per the collective bargaining agreement.
