Purpose of the Position

Under general supervision of Dispatch and Terminal Manager, this role is responsible for providing bus transportation on daily routes when called in, as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures that all actions are in concert with the Board policies as well as the mission statement, beliefs, objectives and parameters found in the Board’s strategic plan.
  • Participates in job training and professional growth opportunities in order to enhance ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Operates school buses to transport students to and from school in a safe and timely fashion from assigned locations per approved schedule.
  • Explains rules and regulations to students riding on the bus.
  • Uses assertive discipline and other acceptable techniques in dealing with student discipline.
  • Completing disciplinary reports for students who do not respond to disciplinary actions.
  • Turning in disciplinary reports to field supervisors.
  • Performs daily pre-trip inspection of the bus as mandated by the State.
  • Reports all accidents, mechanical problems, and hazardous conditions immediately.
  • Responsible for the care, cleanliness and gassing of bus driven.
  • Attends training courses and meetings to increase skills related to transportation.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records as requested.
  • Carries out and obeys all laws and regulations of Rockford School District #205, Transportation Department, State, Federal and other regulatory bodies.
Qualifications
  • Commercial CDL license with all the endorsements needed to drive the school bus provided.
  • Basic reading and math skills. Good vision and hearing is essential.
Physical Aspects of the Position
  • Climbing – ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding ramps, poles and the like.
  • Balancing – maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
  • Stooping – bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling – bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching – bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching – extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing – particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Walking – moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.
  • Pushing – using upper extremities to press against something with steady force order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling – using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting – raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
  • Finger use – picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with the fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping – applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palm.
  • Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word.
  • Hearing – perceiving the nature of sounds. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds such as when making fine adjustments on machinery.
  • Repetitive Motions – substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
