Position: PW STREET EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
Reports to:

Street Maintenance Supervisor Class Code: 3121

Grade: 23 FLSA:
Non-Exempt Group: AFSCME 1058

Hourly Wage: $23.42

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty operating a variety of light and heavy equipment requiring skilled labor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Safely operate construction and maintenance equipment such as Sweepers, Backhoes, Front-end Loaders, Asphalt Rollers, Chippers, Mowers and Road Graders, End Loaders, Cement Mixers and other equipment as required.

2. Safely operates tree maintenance equipment such as a stump grinder, clam, and other equipment as required.

3. Drives City vehicles including snowplow, hot mix truck and cold mix truck.

4. Responsible for job daily assignments including completing all required work orders, acting as lead for small crews when required, performing general labor, and insuring that assigned job site has been cleaned and left without safety hazards.

5. Assists in concrete work including mixing concrete and assisting with concrete finishing.

6. Participates in snow removal operations of City streets, crosswalks, and parking lots including spreading salt and sand as required.

7. Mows and maintains City green space using appropriate maintenance equipment.

8. Participates in required patching and repair of City streets and alleys including any required preparation for sealing operations.

9. Responsible for the daily maintenance of assigned City vehicle, including checking and maintaining fluid levels, checking vehicle safety features, and washing and cleaning interiors and exteriors.

10. Maintains tools and equipment in good working order.

11. Observes basic safety practices.

12. Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND

SKILLS:

Some knowledge of equipment operation, and of general traffic laws.

Some skill in driving a vehicle in heavy traffic and various weather conditions; in following simple written and verbal instructions; and in being able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor.

TRAINING AND

EXPERIENCE:

High School or GED. Three (3) years of experience in general laboring or construction work, including one (1) year of experience in operating trucks and other construction equipment; or, any equivalent combination of training and experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves frequent walking, standing, and driving; as well as lifting and carrying of heavy objects (over 50 pounds). The majority of the work is conducted outside and may involve regular exposure to adverse conditions and exposure to the rough and uneven terrain.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Class B Illinois Commercial Driver's License at time of hire.

Effective March 3, 2004:
All new hires shall be required to obtain a Class A license as required by position.

Ability to work well with the general public.

Residency Requirement:

Temporary Modification to Residency Requirement effective November 15, 2021: all newly hired employees shall live anywhere within Winnebago County or anywhere within fifteen (15) miles of Rockford City Hall within six (6) months of the completion of their introductory period.

Effective June 1, 2018, all newly hired employees, including newly hired Department Heads, shall live within the municipal boundaries of City of Rockford within six (6) months of their completion of their introductory period.

Classified employees hired after January 1, 1984, may live anywhere in Winnebago County or anywhere within an area fifteen (15) miles from the Public Safety Building within six (6) months of their date of completion of probation. Employees hired prior to January 1, 1984, shall be subject to their conditions of employment in effect at that time.
