PRN Respiratory Therapist for Bronch Lab
Join the Mercyhealth Wisconsin and Illinois teams as a PRN Respiratory Therapist for the Bronch Lab. This role provides comprehensive respiratory care under physician direction and works across a range of units including pediatrics, emergency/trauma, critical care, pulmonary function, bronch lab, NICU, and more.
OverviewUnder the direction of a physician, the RRT provides all respiratory care related duties and functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team. The RRT sets up and administers routine and complex respiratory care procedures, provides critical and emergent care, airway stabilization, non‑invasive ventilation, and manages acute care ventilators. The candidate exemplifies Mercyhealth mission, vision and values and adheres to organizational policies.

- Perform routine therapies for treatment, diagnosis, and evaluation of cardiopulmonary status.
- Initiate, monitor, evaluate, and wean invasive and non‑invasive ventilation.
- Recommend ventilator parameters based on assessment and lab values.
- Provide ongoing evaluation of treatment regimes, including medication delivery and oxygen administration.
- Assess patients pre and post medication, procedure, or device, and recommend therapy changes.
- Educate patients/families and document care in the electronic medical record.
- Demonstrate competence in set‑up, calibration, and troubleshooting of mechanical ventilators, non‑invasive devices, therapeutic bronchoscopies, and pulmonary function screens.
- Maintain equipment cleanliness, assembly, and supply inventory using high‑level disinfection.
- Perform emergency rounds, oxygen saturation checks, and titrate oxygen per protocol.
- Follow universal precautions and proper body mechanics, using sound judgment in situational evaluation.
- Participate in emergent care situations, providing chest compressions, airway management, and ventilatory support per American Heart Association guidelines.
- Transport adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients on ventilators and critically ill to intrahospital procedures.
- Provide developmentally appropriate care for neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients, considering age‑related and psychosocial needs.
- Assist with new employee orientation, mentor staff and students, and act as charge therapist in the Lead RT’s absence.
- Engage in department or professional projects, such as obtaining additional certifications, participating in community education, QA & PI, Joint Commission accreditation, and regional peri‑natal designation processes.
- Maintain competence in specialty areas such as pulmonary function, bronch lab, and NICU procedures.
- Perform point‑of‑care blood gases, glucose, and electrolyte processing when applicable.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care Program.
- Minimum 1 year respiratory experience, 6 months in critical care.
- RRT or CRT accepted; other CRTs must earn RRT within 1 year.
- CPR certification.
- NRP certification within 90 days of orientation for units requiring delivery attendance.
- Illinois and/or Wisconsin Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
- Specialty credential preferred (NPS, CPFT, RPFT).
