Overview

Works under the direction of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The primary responsibilities include maintaining a sterile and safe operating room environment, ensuring equipment functions properly, and assisting the surgical team to maximize patient safety. This role may involve day, evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on‑call hours. Additional duties as assigned may include performance improvement activities.

Responsibilities
  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon, ensuring quality patient care and maintaining the sterile field.
  • Assists the surgical team before, during, and after surgery by performing the following duties.
  • Checks instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, medication, and solutions needed for each procedure.
  • Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table and in draping the sterile field according to procedure and physician preference.
  • Performs appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator according to policy prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants. Creates and maintains the sterile field, maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure, may sponge operative site, hold retractors, cut suture, and cauterize previously clamped vessels as directed by the surgeon. Prepares sterile dressings and applies and secures dressings when applicable and directed.
  • Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room after each procedure and assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred. Graduate of a CAAHEP‑accredited Surgical Technology program required or program currently participating in accreditation process. Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Scrub Technologist.

Certification and Licensure

Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA preferred; required if program is not accredited but currently participating in accreditation process. Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days (other certifications per unit…
