Job Summary

Rock Valley College seeks an engaging, innovative sociology instructor to teach assigned classes in multiple modes of delivery (in-person, online and hybrid). This position also requires engagement with the course and program assessment process and completion of required institutional training related to teaching in online and hybrid modes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Meet classes at assigned times.
  • Plan course content and assign appropriate coursework.
  • Maintain student records.
  • Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages active participation and engagement; be responsive to student inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate student progress and assign grades.
  • Revise course outlines, objectives, and catalog information as needed.
  • Select appropriate texts and teaching materials.
  • Maintain office hours convenient for students and as required by college policies.
  • Prepare course/class reports as required.
  • Attend and participate in conferences related to teaching area; membership in appropriate professional organizations is recommended.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the profession.
  • Participate in department, division meetings and in-service training, etc.
  • Participate in assessment of student learning at the course, program, and institution level.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to the department's initiatives and activities.
  • Adhere to college, divisional and departmental policies, procedures, standard practice and academic standards.
  • Assist in short-range and long-range planning.
  • Related duties may be assigned.
Related Duties
  • Assist in program assessment planning.
  • Assist in student recruitment and retention activities.

Required

Minimum Qualifications

Earned Master’s Degree in Sociology or related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Sociology and the ability to teach one or more sections of Introduction to Sociology courses.
