Illinois Extension has operated for more than 100 years connecting the citizens of Illinois to their land-grant university by providing educational programming around the state. University of Illinois Extension is based in the College of ACES and works with all colleges and units of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Position The Visiting Extension Educator is a full-time, 12-month academic professional with primary responsibility for the development, delivery, and evaluation of educational programs supporting the mission of the University of Illinois Extension. Extension Educators support one of the four core Extension program areas and may focus on one or more interdisciplinary initiatives:
Community, Environment, Economy, Food, and Health. Programmatic objectives align with national and statewide priorities.

Responsibilities summary Extension Educators deliver research-based programs, work in team settings with other educators, professionals, and faculty, and establish professional networks and stakeholder relationships. They may serve clients within multiple units as requested.

Location Unit 1 – Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Winnebago Counties (Position housed in Winnebago County – Rockford, IL). Additional positions may be available in other locations. This is a security-sensitive position with comprehensive background checks.

Program Development, Delivery and Evaluation
  • Provide program leadership, interpret and integrate information, teach in the designated field, maintain competencies to develop and deliver educational programming, and assist clients with appropriate resources.
  • Assess the needs of local clientele in a systematic and analytical manner, networking and collaborating with community organizations and other relevant groups.
  • Develop innovative curricula and programs within designated areas to address local needs and align with broader state and national initiatives.
  • Deliver high-impact programs to diverse audiences using a variety of delivery methods; collaborate with Extension employees and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Guide program expansion and quality processes by teaching and training employees or volunteers within the program area.
  • Support voluntary educational delivery systems with subject-matter expertise.
  • Evaluate the impact of program initiatives with short- and long-term outcomes in mind.
  • Develop contemporary communication approaches, including electronic technologies (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, blogs, e-learning).
  • Comply with reporting deadlines and requirements (plans of work, activity and impact reporting, etc.).
Organizational Leadership and Development
  • Market and represent Extension to external partners and stakeholders in relevant expertise areas.
  • Compete for internal and external resources to enhance program quality and impact.
  • Collaborate with County Directors to support budgeting, staffing, grants, reporting, and program operations.
  • Develop professional collaborations with County Directors, other Educators, and Extension Council Members.
  • Support the total University of Illinois Extension program and accept statewide responsibilities as recommended by leadership.
  • Lead unit teams and serve in leadership roles as appropriate; perform other duties aligned with Extension programming.
