Job Overview
Under general supervision, performs skilled work on the maintenance and repair of treatment plant equipment; participates in facility maintenance; maintains records of work assignments; may operate treatment equipment as required.
Responsibilities- Operate, maintain, and repair mechanical equipment to include diesel and gas engines, electric motors, blowers, pumps, valves, chemical feeders, filters, conveyors, recorders, meters, compressors, and boilers; lubricates and oils machinery.
- Assure all backup systems are maintained and equipment related to providing essential power sources remain in operating condition at all times.
- Disassemble, tune, clean, repair, and replace damaged or worn parts; overhaul, reassemble, reinstall, and return to full operating condition all equipment and materials integral to system operations.
- Assemble and install new components; set‑up and integrate into existing system operations.
- Assist electrical/instrumentation workers; disassemble, install, and reassemble system equipment during instrumentation repair projects.
- Use test equipment and schematics to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment and systems.
- Read and interpret electrical, hydraulic, piping, and mechanical drawings and schematics.
- Supervise subordinates in the repair and maintenance of treatment equipment; perform preventative maintenance inspections of equipment; maintain records of maintenance activities.
- Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance of air conditioning and heating systems; perform minor repairs to plumbing fixtures; participate in routine building maintenance such as carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing, and mechanical work.
- Utilize gas and electric welding and cutting tools to fabricate parts and repair and maintain machinery and equipment.
- Assist in the purchasing and procurement of parts and services.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.
- Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED.
- Two (2) years experience in the building or mechanical trades.
- Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, materials, and techniques in the operation, maintenance, and repair of treatment machinery.
- Working knowledge of principles applicable to water and wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety practices, procedures, and standards applicable to industrial plant operations and maintenance.
- Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.
- Ability to perform strenuous mechanical and manual labor, often in limited work spaces.
- Ability to operate a forklift.
- Must be able to follow safety procedures and rules, including those pertaining to permit required for confined spaces.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
- Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.
- Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.
- Ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
- Ability to perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment, and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.
- Requires valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent upon application or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days from hire date.
