Position Overview/Duties The Rock Island District's Natural Resources Management (NRM) Program delivers safe public access to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) lands and waters in a manner that protects project purposes and mission areas through responsible outdoor recreation, environmental conservation, and land use management while partnering with communities to serve the American people. The commitment of USACE to natural and recreational resources provides social, economic, and environmental benefits which support health and wellness, education, jobs and income at the local, regional and national level.
Currently, the District is seeking an experienced Natural Resources professional at the Mississippi River Project Office to serve as the Chief of the Natural Resources Section.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the development of all natural resource programs and park and recreational facilities on the Mississippi River within District boundaries.
- Planning of appropriate resources, operations, and maintenance required for assigned work to be accomplished.
- Representing the Rock Island District's Mississippi River Project in public meetings, information exchange groups, courts, media, etc., on matters affecting the project/area.
- Coordinating program efforts with other internal activities/offices and other external agencies when needed.
- Creating operation and maintenance plans for project facilities, public use areas and natural resources.
- Preserving and protecting rare and/or endangered species of flora and fauna, and cultural and historic resources by utilizing natural resource management techniques, impacting the diverse missions of Navigation, Recreation, and Environmental Stewardship with oversight responsibility for the planning, coordination, and direction of multidisciplinary teams and programs.
- Managing forested lands and implementing habitat
-restoration projects, ensuring that timber harvesting, reforestation, and invasive species management align with federal and environmental regulations. - Collaborating with experts across disciplines to develop and share solutions for complex multidisciplinary issues such as balancing recreation, conservation and infrastructure needs along the river.
- Ensuring that utility systems and site environment support safe public usage and meet certification requirements.
- Providing recommendations and reviewing other input for negotiation of local law enforcement contracts and administering contracts to ensure public compliance with Title 36 and local and state laws.
- Establishing plans and budget and direct all range, fish, and wildlife management; out grant management; archaeological and cultural resource management; and insect, rodent, pollution, and erosion control.
- Directing the development and implementation of plans for managing parks and recreation facilities in support of public use.
