Overview

The Rock Island District's Operations Division is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of a 9-foot navigation channel on 314 miles of the Upper Mississippi River and 268 miles of the Illinois Waterway, as well as the operation of 18 (total) lock and dam sites. This inland waterway navigation system is essential to the local, national and international economy.

The District’s work on this system allows for safe and efficient transport of a wide variety of commodities and barge traffic. The District’s lock and dam system accounts for hundreds of millions of dollars in interstate commerce each year. The Rock Island District’s waterway navigation system is the second longest of any Corps District and the number of locks and dams it manages also ranks second within the Corps.

The District's Operations Division is currently seeking 2 Civil Engineering Technicians to join our team, where your responsibilities will include:

Responsibilities
  • Establishing, collecting, editing, and processing hydrographic survey data for condition, pre- / post-dredge surveys, post-flood surveys, engineering surveys, and scour surveys using HYPACK and associated survey software.
  • Collecting and editing multibeam data using survey vessels to assure accuracy by performing appropriate overlap checks and comparisons following standardized software processes of quality assurance.
  • Processing hydrographic survey data to establish and compute parameters for use in making engineering computations for yardage estimates, shoaling rates, and cross-sections.
  • Serving as a field specialist on hardware and software systems used to conduct hydrographic surveys.
  • Developing products from processed survey data using Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and similar software programs.
  • Preparing survey reports documenting technical results of study/investigation, providing technical evaluation to team members.

  • This position is subject to random drug testing in accordance with AR 600-85 and/or EP 600-1-3 based on the duties of operating a motorboat to perform hydrographic surveys.
  • Temporary duty travel is required 25% or more of the time depending on mission duties and site location.
  • Must possess a valid State motor vehicle operator's license for the class of vehicle being operated based on site-specific, job-related requirements, and must maintain this license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a required Corps of Engineers boat license (within six months of starting the position) for the operation of a motorboat and must maintain this license. Incumbent will be required to gain knowledge to obtain the required license for the operation of a vessel not to exceed 45 feet in length.
