About Augustana College
Augustana College is a private, selective, residential liberal arts and sciences college with an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students. Our scenic 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River, about 165 miles west of Chicago. The Quad Cities region has a population of approximately 450,000.
Augustana offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in nearly 100 majors and related academic programs, as well as a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. The PositionAugustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a visiting faculty position in Math and Computer Science beginning in August of the academic year, with the possibility of renewal by mutual agreement for the academic year.
The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year (standard courses are 4 credits). Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching introductory courses in mathematics, such as college‑level algebra and precalculus. Ideal candidates will also have sufficient expertise to also teach either computer science (at the introductory level, specifically in Python) or data science / statistics (at any level). That said, we encourage applications from candidates of all mathematical backgrounds including: pure mathematics, applied/computational mathematics, and statistics.
The candidate will join five mathematicians and five computer scientists in a joint Mathematics and Computer Science department, with a strong culture of collegiality.
Appointment will be at the rank of visiting instructor or visiting assistant professor, depending on whether a terminal degree is completed.
No research or campus service is required in this position. However, visiting faculty are encouraged to engage in departmental and college life beyond teaching. All faculty at Augustana College are invited to participate in professional development and mentoring opportunities consistent with their needs throughout their appointment.
What We’re Looking ForThe minimum requirement for this position is to hold at least a master’s degree in mathematics (or a closely related field). Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Ability to teach introductory mathematics courses, such as Pre Calculus, or statistics, data science, or computer science courses, especially in small classroom settings where hands‑on active learning is prioritized.
- A history of effective teaching, especially in introductory mathematics or statistics courses.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- A commitment to supporting students from a range of cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
Additionally, preference will be given to candidates with:
- Expertise in data science / statistics.
- Expertise in computer science (specifically using the Python language).
