Patient Access Lead Representative – Piedmont Medical Center
We are looking for a Patient Access Lead Representative to support departmental efficiencies by managing financial clearance, customer service, and operational reporting. This role requires strong leadership, knowledge of hospital processes, and the ability to coordinate closely with clinical and billing teams.
Job SummaryDemonstrate knowledge of departmental financial clearance and display leadership skills to oversee a wide range of duties. Responsibilities include arranging hospital services requested by patients, performing thorough ADT and revenue cycle analysis, driving team performance, leading shift Patient Access Operations, and collaborating with department leaders in process and operational excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Greeting customers following Conifer Standards of Care, providing world‑class customer service, completing full patient registration at the date of service, and adhering to financial and cash control policies.
- Explaining and securing hospital and patient legal forms (e.g., Advance Directives, Consent for Treatment, Mandatory Medicare messages, EMTALA).
- Scheduling diagnostic or surgical procedures, conducting physician/patient interviews, and explaining hospital procedure guidelines and policies.
- Coordinating with clinical departments on schedule modifications.
- Providing full patient financial counseling, education, and referrals; handling patient liability collection escalations; performing hospital cash reconciliation and secured payment entry.
- Securing medical necessity checks and verification in accordance with Medicare guidelines; verifying insurance, benefits, coverage, and eligibility; obtaining authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled services.
- Performing analysis of admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) data and revenue cycle reports; producing departmental operational reports; leading shift patient access operations.
- Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.
- Proficiency with hospital software, programs, and equipment, including PCs.
- Knowledge of hospital functions and relationships is preferred.
- Advanced customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of third‑party payor requirements and compliance standards.
- Performance in patient liability collection and productivity.
- Cross‑training in all Patient Access service areas.
- Strong negotiation and collection techniques.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external clients.
- Identification of opportunities to improve patient relations and streamline registration processes.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2–4 years of experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related area.
- 2–4 years of experience in Patient Access preferred.
- 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead role preferred.
- A 2–4 year college degree in Business, Accounting, Medical Administration, or related area is preferred.
- Ability to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods.
- Occasional lifting or carrying items up to 25 pounds.
- Frequent standing, sitting, and walking.
- Occasionally push a wheelchair to assist patients.
- Hospital administration setting.
- Exposure to patient care locations with potential life‑threatening conditions.
- Availability to work required hours and days.
- Availability for on‑call scheduling support.
- Ability to resolve physician office and patient issues during extreme patient volumes.
