Summary / OverviewSafely runs paving machines to spread and level hot asphalt for roads, parking lots, and driveways, monitoring material flow, coordinating with dump trucks, and performing daily equipment checks and basic maintenance for consistent, high‑quality pavement.
Essential Job Functions- Skillfully and safely operate asphalt pavers, controlling speed, direction, and screed to apply material evenly.
- Maintain constant flow of asphalt from dump trucks into the hopper to prevent asphalt segregation.
- Responsible for consistency and uniformity of material compaction after being placed by hand or with a paver.
- Maintain equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance and repair tasks such as adjusting, fluid checks, replacing minor parts and lubricating equipment.
- Must maintain an acute sense of awareness to the surrounding footprint of the machine (watch for obstructions while operating the equipment, such as ground utilities, curb and gutters, overhead wires and trees).
- Maintain constant visual contact with screed operators, dump man and trucks in front of the paver.
- Conduct daily pre‑shift checks, perform minor repairs (lubrication, fluid checks), and ensure the machine operates safely.
- Communicate with screed operators, dump truck drivers, and other crew members to ensure seamless operation.
- Watch for obstructions and maintain awareness of the surrounding work area, including utilities and curbs.
- Required to perform general laborer duties as assigned.
- Adhere to all safety procedures, wear PPE, and ensure a safe work environment, often near traffic or in extreme temperatures.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of (2) years’ experience operating heavy paving equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various conditions.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment upkeep.
- Good communication and teamwork.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- CDL a plus especially with tanker endorsement.
- 90% of work is located within a 1‑hour radius of the York, PA shop location.
- Residential, commercial and municipal work.
- Parking lots and commercial work. roadway paving for cities, PennDOT roadways and township roadways.
- Work in various environmental conditions, including hot surfaces and uneven terrain.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
