Role
Extrusion Manager

LOCATION
Rochester, NY

Summary

Manage the employees and equipment in the Extrusion Department to maintain continuous improvement in Safety, Quality, Waste, and Productivity in the department. Also provide backup support to the Plant Manager as needed during vacations, absences, or when additional plant-wide resources are required. Directly supervises manufacturing Supervisors and process engineers, and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Leads the safety effort in the department through job and equipment analysis and improvement, incident analysis, and active participation with the COE’s safety committee.
  • Ensures production quality in the department through adherence to specifications, process controls, and established GMPs for extrusion. Plans and implements improvements in equipment and methods to continually improve product quality.
  • Ensures housekeeping within the department meets safety and quality GMP requirements.
  • Is responsible for meeting divisional waste goals. Analyzes sources of waste and implements improvements to eliminate them.
  • Meets established budgeted production standards for setup, downtime, and run speeds. Plans and implements improvements to productivity in these areas.
  • Develops personal and departmental goals that reflect and support the division’s goals.
  • Demonstrates a healthy work ethic and good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Takes responsibility for assigned work and follows all Plant Safety Rules, GMPs, and other training requirements.

Supporting activities related to the essential duties:

  • Analyzes safety incidents, quality defects (customer and internal), and productivity losses to determine root cause and corrective actions.
  • Provides communication to the department in various formats to foster teamwork and ensure understanding of department status, performance, and objectives.
  • Evaluates upcoming production schedule and provides feedback on sequencing to maximize setup and run efficiency.
  • Evaluates employees and crew alignment; provides training to foster improvement; recognizes high performance; and takes disciplinary action as needed to ensure compliance with division policies.
  • Identifies maintenance needs and coordinates with maintenance and production scheduling to accomplish tasks.
  • Identifies short- and long-term capital improvements and writes justifications for capital requests.
  • Evaluates use of purchased supplies and seeks lower-cost alternatives or higher return options.
  • Coordinates daily operations, short-term focus teams, and long-term committees to drive improvement in listed areas.
  • Develops or directs the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures for the department.
Qualification Requirements

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED and one to three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business materials; write reports and procedures; and present information to groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
