Compensation range: $28.47 - $39.84 per hour.
To provide outpatient counseling services under direct supervision as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team caring for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders (COD) and their families, when indicated. Work on specific treatment goals as designed with supervision. Maintain productivity in accordance with program and departmental standards and comply with program and departmental policies and procedures.
The substance use counselor 2 will have direct supervisory or mentoring responsibilities for counselor interns and new staff. Report to the Clinical Supervisor of assigned clinic.
Contribute to a culturally competent environment by treating patients, families, trainees, research subjects, and co-workers in a sensitive and caring manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences. Participate in available cultural competence events and trainings.
Essential Functions- Perform intake evaluations by direct interview of persons applying for treatment. Assess chemical use history, patterns, types, and amounts, and evaluate substance use disorder symptoms, psychosocial history, motivation for change, and personal resources. Collect family history and prepare oral and written clinical reports. Submit reports with supervision.
Note: Time spent may vary. - Carry out counseling of SUD and COD patients within the framework of a comprehensive treatment plan. Demonstrate evidence-based practices, empathy, confrontation, and supportive skills, monitor patient participation and motivation, communicate treatment with other team members, and establish long-term counseling relationships.
- Independently facilitate group therapy for persons with substance use disorders. Maintain working knowledge of group therapy concepts, develop creative group programming, and manage group rosters and documentation.
- Coordinate care and support for persons with substance use disorders with family, other health agencies, employers, criminal justice programs, and social services. Adhere to confidentiality rules, and coordinate appropriate referrals to community providers.
- Maintain active case records, including treatment plans, progress notes, updates, discharge summaries, interagency communications, and correspondence.
- Participate in program staff development and informational activities, maintain continuing education, provide on-site teaching to multidisciplinary students, give lectures/talks on specific topics to patients and families, and report to clinical supervisor for supervision of all clinical activity.
- Other duties as assigned, including milieu supervisor, collaborative care sessions, mentorship of new staff and interns, management in clinic area, toxicology screen monitoring, assessment of patient behavior regarding drug/alcohol use, administering toxicology tests, ensuring safety of patients and staff, and supervising interns.
- Master's degree in a discipline related to human services and 1 year of related experience in substance use disorder treatment setting required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred knowledge of addiction treatment, counseling theories and techniques, clinical writing, and health and human services resources.
- NYS Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) or CASAC‑T.
- If hired with CASAC‑T, complete examination and required hours within 18 months to obtain full CASAC credential.
