Metallurgist – Rochester, NY
Howmet Engines (HES) is seeking a Metallurgist to support the Quality department and Sales activities. Investigate and conduct experiments concerned with physical characteristics, properties, and processing of metals to develop methods of commercially manufacturing forgings from primarily ferrous, titanium and nickel-base alloys. This position is located at our aerospace forging plant in Rochester, NY and is eligible for a $1,000 sign‑on bonus.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Using a working knowledge of primarily ferrous, titanium and nickel-base alloy metallurgy and processing, work with the Sales Department on contract review.
- Understand and work to quality requirements of our major aerospace customers including product approvals and non‑conformance controls.
- Work with process engineers and operations groups to develop hot working, cold working, and heat‑treating processes to obtain desired characteristics of customer specifications, and issue reports accordingly.
- Consult with engineers and the operations staff to develop methods of manufacturing alloys at minimum costs, and implement robust shop floor instructions.
- Support continuous improvement and cost reduction activities as directed, including the use of quality and finite element analysis tools as appropriate.
- Support quality functions including documentation release of incoming raw material and forging certificates of conformity.
- Study manufacturing problems to determine the most efficient methods of processing metals commercially, and issue reports accordingly.
- Work with the heat treat department to oversee furnace surveys, heat treat operator qualification training and exams, and Brinell hardness qualification exams.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Troubleshoot non‑conforming parts and develop rework to correct problems.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited institution.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Ability to prioritize in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to meet the requirements pertaining to vision acuity testing under the Quality Assurance Manual.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Excel and Word.
- Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Material Science or Metallurgy from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Quality or engineering experience in the aerospace industry.
- Experience in the forging or metals industry.
- Knowledge of statistical techniques, SPC, FMEA.
- Experience with geometric dimension and tolerance (GD&T) principles.
- Experience with the use of measuring devices common to the manufacturing industry such as calipers and micrometers.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9000 and AS 9100 quality standards and material specifications.
- Tier One aerospace DSQR certification.
Salary Range: $80,000–$95,000.
