Job Summary

The engineer will lead teams and projects that solve unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business. These efforts contribute to the development of departmental or divisional strategy and implementation. Participates and represents UI on industry associations. Mentors other employees. Has developed depth and breadth of expertise in distributed generation and broad knowledge of other disciplines. Maintains knowledge of leading-edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations.

Recognized as an expert in own area within the organization and industry. Able to explain complex ideas, anticipate objections, and persuade others to change. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities. Leads teams, acts as a facilitator and experienced mentor, and influences others to change. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Proactively identify and perform special projects and studies that innovatively solve unique and complex problems with broad impact to the business. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve issues or improve processes/services.
  • Solve unique and complex Distributed Generation (DG) interconnection problems. Identify innovative solutions (e.g., customer generators, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells).
  • Approve, maintain, and understand drawings (e.g., schematics, one-line diagrams). Assemble documents and other requirements for assignments of complex level of difficulty using breadth of expertise.
  • Recognized expert for generator interconnections. Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices or process improvements. Participate in industry associations.
  • Lead teams and act as facilitator and mentor. Develop innovative services and make recommendations with respect to stakeholder needs. May present to regulatory/public entities.
  • Facilitate DG interconnection project teams; mentor engineers for DG interconnections in design and engineering development. Manage resources outside of the department.
  • Design systems to resolve overly complex problems in non-standard situations and develop creative solutions that achieve division results. Apply design standards, industry codes, guidelines, and UI policies/procedures.
  • Represent Engineering on projects, task forces and studies. Develop business cases and manage divisional and company-wide projects/processes/initiatives.
  • Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor, and control budgets/estimates and construction plans. Manage resource allocations to ensure adequate resources are available.
  • Provide technical leadership in the most complex projects with wide business impact. Mentor and develop team members in technical skills. Liaise with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices. Work independently with little supervision.
  • For the Principal Engineer: influence and guide department engineers; provide technical leadership; mentor and develop the team; serve as SME for the team; liaise with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required
  • 10+ years minimum relevant experience
  • Professional Engineering License Required
  • Theoretical engineering knowledge in planning, operations and engineering design; analytic, modeling and calculation; global view of the business
  • Practical engineering experience in planning, operations and engineering design, construction; field experience; ability to perform economic analyses and develop business cases
  • Engineering documentation – ability to document and interpret engineering work
  • Ability to review and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with standards, specifications, and contract requirements
  • Knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment – local, state and federal standards
