We're hiring a Process Engineer to join our Printed Electronics team onsite in Rochester, NY and focus on new product integration and customer commercialization processes.
This is an additive manufacturing, specifically printing, Process Engineer position in the printed electronics organization. The printed electronics process utilizes production-scale, roll-to-roll equipment in class 1,000 and 10,000 cleanroom environments. The equipment is used for the development and manufacturing of patterned conductive films using two fundamental process blocks: flexographic printing and electroless copper plating. The scope of this position includes full ownership and oversight of the flexographic printing process, including pre-press operations, with strong collaboration across the process steps for full production optimization.
The right candidate will be able to ensure that the current process continues to deliver consistently high-quality printed electronics products to our customers, while driving meaningful improvements in existing processes. A successful candidate will be able to balance the needs of a robust manufacturing environment with the flexibility required to explore development projects to better meet the needs of our current product portfolio and future customers.
It is expected that the successful candidate will be comfortable leading the implementation of process improvements in any aspects flexographic printing process – including chemistry, hardware, software and process changes.
- Hands‑on process owner and expert for the flexographic printing process, including pre‑press processes, with daily decision‑making and oversight responsibilities.
- Work with the print process technician to ensure operations and maintenance have the technical support needed for both press and pre‑press activities.
- Work directly with the Operations Manager to lead the mastering (pre‑press) and printing process staff and optimize schedules and equipment utilization.
- Work closely with maintenance staff to identify and develop equipment reliability improvements.
- Troubleshoot equipment and process problems to identify root cause, then provide recommendations and implement preventive measures.
- Drive process improvements through systematic exploration of opportunities using best practices – with a focus on manufacturability and process robustness.
- Serve on Manufacturing and Operations teams addressing current product engineering and design‑for‑manufacturability improvements.
- Serve on New Product Introduction teams addressing product opportunities requiring the verification or development of process capability to achieve customer requirements.
- Understand health, safety and environmental regulations and apply to equipment to assure personnel and plant safety. Participation in process safety reviews.
- Ideal experience level between 5‑20 years.
- Minimum B.S. Degree in a relevant field, including but not limited to chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or materials engineering.
- First‑hand experience with roll‑to‑roll manufacturing.
- Experience with contact printing techniques, specifically flexography and/or gravure, and their associated pre‑press and on‑press workflows.
- Ability to use SPC for routine process monitoring and to drive process improvement.
- Proven track record driving continuous improvement in a manufacturing operation using disciplined management‑of‑change processes.
- Ability to translate customer requirements to production specifications, including identifying and implementing any product‑specific process modifications.
- Experience working with vendors to evaluate hardware alternatives for process optimization.
- Ability to work in a flexible R&D / low‑volume manufacturing operation, with experience in volume manufacturing and ability to support rapid ramp‑up from pilot scale to production.
