Senior Transmission Line Design Engineer – WSP, U.S.
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Transmission Line Design Engineer for our Rochester, NY office. The following locations will also be considered:
Buffalo, NY and Binghamton, NY
. Join us in delivering innovative power delivery solutions and supporting the world’s energy transition.
- Provide transmission line design and engineering consulting services to major power and energy utility clients, independent power producers, and energy project developers.
- Design electrical transmission facilities including line layout, foundations, structure configuration, structures, insulation and conductor specification.
- Prepare project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
- Deliver accurate and thorough substation and control house designs that meet industry standards and specifications, and good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
- Review internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
- Resolve site queries, attend site meetings and perform site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
- Maintain complete project documentation with respect to substation design and construction, including all completion packages, as‑built requirements and return data information.
- Make and maintain appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinate design activities with multi‑disciplined project team members.
- Maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support projects.
- Maintain good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and others affecting quality, schedule and cost.
- Collect, compile and analyze data relating to substation components, equipment specifications for procurement package development and pricing, IFR/IRC design and review processes, and IEEE/NESC Standards/NERC regulations.
- Participate in incorporating future‑ready techniques, concept development, operating strategies, and various design requirements with equipment sizing and cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit and trenching design strategies that account for safety and functionality.
- Support senior engineers with research and recommendations of fundamental components identified in design requirements, as well as field equipment applications and operations.
- Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on various engineering, design, testing, maintenance modifications and construction procedures.
- Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, and power distribution.
- Prepare data and visualisations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations and illustrations for interpretation or presentation of data, findings or analyses.
- Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis and reporting.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore or address design and/or electrical engineering issues.
- Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
- Work collaboratively with other engineers and disciplines on projects with electrical infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional and local funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- A degree in Civil, Electrical, or related Engineering field from a recognised institution.
- 5+ years of relevant post‑education experience in an electrical engineering capacity designing transmission lines in utility or industrial/commercial environments.
- Relevant experience in transmission line design and a working knowledge of PLSCadd.
- Engineer in Training certification or eligibility for PE licensing.
