Location: City of Rochester

Responsibilities

Oversees and coordinates all aspects of education and community engagement programs; collaborates with area educators, conducting staff, and Artistic Operations staff in the development of concert themes, repertoire, and programs; collaborates with area churches, schools, and community venues to schedule concerts in satellite venues; identifies talent such as conductors, soloists, narrators, and dancers.

Develops pre-concert teaching materials in conjunction with area educators (program/activity booklets, curriculum guides, etc.) to be posted on RPO website in advance of concerts.

Establishes and maintains productive relationships with the music and arts‑in‑education communities; establishes and maintains communications with the education directors of other local arts organizations; seeks appropriate opportunities for collaboration.

Assists the Development Department in seeking educational funding opportunities; provides narrative for funding proposals that support educational projects.

Assists the Marketing and Public Relations Department in the development of any promotional materials related to education and community engagement concerts, contributes to in‑house publications, serves as main contact to media for education department; provides narrative about education programs for RPO website.

Serves as a liaison to the Rochester Philharmonic League (RPL) and assists with their education programs (Young Artist Auditions, Music Munch & Mingle, etc.). Serves as ex‑officio member of the RPL’s and Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s Board of Directors; serves as RPO representative for the ROCmusic Collaborative; assists with the Music Educator’s Award committee.

Oversees continued development of RPO’s strategic plan.

Supervises one or more interns (usually from the Eastman School of Music) per year. Works with volunteers to implement programs.

Maintain the education database.

Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education, Music or Arts Administration;
Master’s degree preferred
At least 5 years’ experience working in the education department of an arts organization with increasing responsibilities; orchestra experience preferred
Experience in strategic and long‑range planning
Experience in program development and evaluation
Experience in developing pre‑concert lesson plans and activities
Ability to work effectively with various constituencies
Exemplary organization skills, ability to manage many projects at once
Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of classical artists and repertoire is essential
Highly organized, self‑motivated, and able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
An energetic, diplomatic and professional demeanor
