Job Description

We are seeking an experienced speech or debate coach to guide a rookie team at Rochester Prep High School. On our students  paths to and through college, nationally recognized competitive programs provide an edge for college admissions, but also for college persistence. The coach will be responsible for all aspects of competition, including identifying tournaments, registration, securing judges, tryouts, motivating and preparing students, and keeping school leaders informed of progress.

The coaching role is part-time and will report to the Enrichment Program Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and identify appropriate tournaments and sign up for competitions in partnership with the school-based Enrichment Program Manager.
  • Prepare and accompany students to competitions; coach and travel with students to at least all competitions.
  • Coordinate long-term coaching during projects, including meetings with students on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day, from August to June.
  • Ensure ongoing communication about absences caused by team tournaments during standard work hours.
  • Chaperone students to regional/local competitions ahead of the national competition as preparation.
  • Develop and implement a family communication protocol using Remind to update families about competition schedules, after-school practices, and club activities.
  • Work with families to obtain signed parent permission forms indicating after-school commitment.
  • Internal coaches are responsible for preparation and communication regarding absences due to tournaments.

Qualifications

  • Preparation & Practice Time:
Up to 6 hours per week.
  • Up to 2 hours per week preparing for projects, competitions, and after-school practices.
  • Long-term coaching during projects:
Meet with students Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day, August to June.
  • On average at least 6 hours of practice outside of school hours weekly, working directly with students to prepare for competition.
  • At least 6 weekend tournaments over a 6-month period.
  • Research and identify appropriate competitions and tournaments; sign up for competitions in partnership with the school-based Enrichment Program Manager.

Additional Information

  • Coaches will receive an annual stipend of $3,500-$4,000 based on experience and contracted hours per week, paid semi-monthly.
  • If you stop performing responsibilities before they are fully completed, your stipend will be adjusted accordingly.
