Overview

The Custodian is assigned responsibilities involving the care and cleaning of municipal public buildings and maintaining a safe environment for all staff and visitors.

Supervision

Incumbent in this position performs repetitive manual duties under the general supervision of the Municipal Services Supervisor or designee. Most work is performed independently but employee must consult with supervisor on any unusual or new work assignments. Supervisor usually evaluates work while in progress or upon completion. The incumbent is required to recognize instances, which are out of the ordinary, and which do not fall within existing instructions;

the incumbent is then expected to seek advice and further instructions from supervisor.

Job Environment

Work consists mainly of a variety of responsible building cleaning duties performed indoors; some work is performed outdoors under varied weather conditions; most duties are repetitive in nature but there are variations due to the type of overall work involved. Most work is standardized; in instances where it is not, employee looks to supervisor for guidance. Safety precautions must be observed at all times.

Incumbent is expected to provide coverage at other buildings; work outside of normal business hours for purposes of events being held in City buildings and to work on weekends in response to emergency situations. May be contacted at home at any time.

Operates light trucks, floor and carpet cleaning machinery, telephones, personal computers, power and hand tools.

The incumbent has some contact with the public; daily contact with the supervisor for the purpose of receiving orders and exchanging information and views about departmental matters. Other contacts are with city staff when necessary to accomplish work responsibilities. Contact is usually in person.

Incumbent may have access to confidential information dependent upon the work area.

Errors could result in delays or loss of service, personal injury, monetary loss, injuries to other employees, damages to building and/or equipment and legal, liability issues for the city.

Incumbent is required to follow standard cleaning and maintenance procedures in regards to the following duties. Normally the sequence of steps to be followed is within the discretion of the incumbent unless the supervisor directs otherwise.

  • Clean, dust, and wipe furniture in offices and hallways; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures.
  • Sweep, mop, or vacuum floors in offices, hallways and stairwells.
  • Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors; shampoo carpets.
  • Polish woodwork in offices, hallways and stairwells.
  • Wash accessible interior and exterior windows and doors. Clean blinds.
  • Stocks bathrooms and offices with necessary supplies and paper goods.
  • Assists with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, events, etc.
  • Lock and unlock assigned buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Assists in moving heavy objects such as: furniture and equipment for meetings, workshops and a variety of other purposes.
  • Perform cleaning and related activities around the exterior of assigned building and parking areas; removing trash, weed garden beds, removing snow and debris from sidewalks and stairs.
  • Attends to emergencies when necessary.
  • Call in work orders.
  • Handle recycling materials.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Performs similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates
