Psychiatric Assessment and Referral Services (PARS) clinicians are responsible for all aspects of both telephone and face‑to‑face crisis intervention/psychiatric triage. They conduct psychiatric assessments which include: history of present illness, safety and risk assessment, family, development, social and medical history, mental status exam; and psychiatric diagnosis. In consult with the covering psychiatrist, the initial treatment plan, including level of care, is determined.
In addition, the PARS clinicians assist with grief and other behavioral health consultations as requested by medical floor staff. They are also responsible for ongoing resource and referral development activities.
PARS Clinicians work closely with behavioral health nursing staff, psychiatry and the Emergency Department staff, coordinating the entire assessment/admission process. For those patients needing alternative services, PARS Clinicians facilitate appropriate disposition (i.e. transfer to another facility, arranging intake appointments).
Responsibilities- Respond to callers and patients presenting to the Emergency Department with behavioral health concerns.
- Complete biopsychosocial assessment including mental status exam and level of care required in a timely manner.
- Provide information to patients and families regarding behavioral health resources for treatment.
- Perform functions of an Involuntary Emergency Admission as needed, including acting as petitioner when necessary, and attending/following through with the court system for the Probable Cause Hearing.
- Work actively with hospital staff/providers in a liaison capacity around patient evaluations and transfer issues, and provide biopsychosocial assessments when requested by the provider.
- Be knowledgeable of, and practice, all de‑escalation techniques.
- Obtain informed consent from patients.
- Educate patients regarding patients’ rights, obtain signature indicating understanding and give copy to the patient.
- Coordinate transfer of patients from other facilities for admission to the Behavioral Health Unit.
- Respond to Code Grays as necessary.
- File abuse reports according to policy as necessary.
- Maintain accurate count of available beds through monitoring daily census, coordinate and review direct referrals, and screen for admission to the BHU.
- Assist on patient unit as requested by PARS Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor, Program Director.
- Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) or related field required.
- 1–3 years of relevant work experience.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
