Dialysis Technician/CHT – Inpatient at Mayo Clinic summary:

Provides direct and technical support for inpatient hemodialysis under RN supervision, including patient care, machine operation/maintenance, water treatment monitoring, vascular access observation, specimen collection, and lab testing/quality control. Works across age groups in hospital dialysis units and ICUs, participates in quality improvement, and must obtain/maintain dialysis technician certification and BLS. Responsibilities

Location: Inpatient Dialysis JO 2B - CHT

Patient Care Type: The hemodialysis units provide 24-hour care for the hospitalized acute/chronic renal failure patient. Dialysis is provided at SMC and RMC in the dialysis units as well as the ICUs. Dialysis care is provided across the age continuum from neonate to geriatric.

The Clinical Hemodialysis Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member to meet patient and family care needs within the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Services (MCDS) system. Under the supervision of the RN, is responsible for providing assistance in the provision of dialysis services through multiple roles. These roles include but are not limited to: direct patient care and observations, basic hemodialysis techniques and procedures, equipment maintenance, water treatment monitoring, vascular access monitoring, cleaning and disinfection of the hemodialysis machine, drawing blood samples and preparing them for transport, and performing both simple and complex laboratory tests and the required quality controls.

Participation in quality improvement activities to maintain patient care standards is also expected. The Clinical Hemodialysis Technician carries out designated skills that are within these functions limited by law to unlicensed nursing personnel, as covered in the Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician and as written into the policies and procedures of Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent required. Certified nursing assistant training course required OR one year of direct patient care experience in a hospital setting or other health care setting OR RN student with one semester of clinical coursework completed OR completion of a Dialysis Technician training program. Before employment, successful completion of the Ishihara's color blindness test.
Excellent communication skills. Computer skills. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends. Ability to effectively work with multiple team members including working at/floating to other dialysis units. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs:
American Heart Association (BLS for Healthcare Providers). Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers) Military Training Network. Successful completion of Clinical Hemodialysis Technician national certification exam, within 18 months of hire when hired after October 14, 2008. Exam offered by the State, BONENT, or NNCC.
