Histology Technician (HT) / Histotechnologist (HTL) – Anatomic Pathology Core
Mayo Clinic is top‑ranked in many specialties and offers competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits. This role is part of the Histology Laboratory, which processes over 400,000 paraffin‑embedded blocks and 1,500,000 slides a year.
Responsibilities- Accession and processing of surgical, autopsy, and research tissue specimens.
- Preparation of hematoxylin‑eosin, routine, special, and immunohistochemical stains.
- Execution of microtomy, paraffin embedding, frozen section, and plastic embedding techniques.
- Quality control and documentation of slide preparation.
- Training and mentoring of laboratory students and new staff.
- Maintenance and troubleshooting of histology equipment.
- Collaboration with pathologists, researchers, and laboratory team to ensure accurate diagnoses and scientific advancement.
- For Histology Technician (HT):
- Associate degree in biology, chemistry, or medical laboratory technology.
- Minimum 12 semester credit hours in chemistry and biology (6 each).
- Histology Technician certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) by start date.
- For Histotechnologist (HTL):
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist by start date.
- Preferred:
Graduate of a NAACLS‑accredited program or Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences Histology Technician Program. - Proficiency in specimen scheduling and willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call shifts.
- Documented ongoing maintenance of ASCP certification for certifications obtained after January 1 2004.

Hourly rate ranges:
- Histology Technician: $26.00 – $38.55
- Histotechnologist: $31.79 – $47.71
Part‑time supplemental role with flexible scheduling; possible weekend and holiday work.
