SUMMARY: The Special Education Teacher (Strat I) provides specialized instruction, academic support, and behavioral interventions for students in grades K-6 with significant learning needs. The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborates with staff and families, and ensures that students have equitable access to curriculum, accommodations, and school activities. This role requires strong instructional skills, knowledge of special education law, and the ability to design supports aligned to students' unique learning profiles.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal, state, and district requirements.
- Provide specially designed instruction across academic areas based on student needs, abilities, and goals.
- Adapt curriculum, modify materials, and integrate instructional strategies that support diverse learners.
- Conduct progress monitoring, assessments, data collection, and reporting to evaluate student growth and adjust instructional plans.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, service providers, and administrators to support student success in general education settings.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, and IEP-related updates.
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and use proactive strategies to support positive student behavior.
- Provide accommodations and support during assessments, classroom activities, and school events.
- Maintain accurate and compliant documentation related to IEPs, services, parent communication, and student data.
- Participate in IEP meetings, professional development, and required district trainings.
- Promote and adhere to district policies, procedures, and professional guidelines for special education service delivery.
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field required.
- Experience working with elementary students with significant or diverse learning needs preferred.
- Experience with behavior management, differentiated instruction, and assistive technology preferred.
- Valid State of Iowa teaching license with a K-12 Strat I endorsement.
- Additional endorsements or training in behavior support, functional academics, or transition services preferred.
- Criminal background check required.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and state special education regulations.
- Ability to design and deliver specially designed instruction across settings.
- Ability to collect and analyze data to drive instructional decisions.
- Ability to write compliant IEPs aligned to student needs and district standards.
- Skill using assistive technology, learning management systems, and district software.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse teams.
- Ability to support a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow ethical standards, and prioritize student safety.
- Ability to stay current with district policy, data privacy requirements, and cybersecurity standards related to student information.
- Operating knowledge of district special education systems, progress monitoring tools, and instructional technology required within 2 months after entering the position.
- Operating knowledge of typical classroom and office equipment (computers, projectors, phones, copiers, email, etc.).
