36 hours per week, Day Shift, 8:00am – 5:30pm flex shift (four 9‑hour shifts, 8:00‑17:30 flex). On‑call coverage for off‑shifts 1 full week including a weekend, rotated approximately every 4 weeks.

General Summary

The Endoscopy Technician functions as part of the Endoscopy Team under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or a Physician and collaborates with all members of the Endoscopy Team. Adheres to accepted standards and follows department policies and procedures while preparing for and assisting with endoscopic procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Apply the principles of asepsis in a competent manner to provide optimum patient care.
  • Participate in general cleaning, stocking, disinfection/sterilization of equipment, instruments and supplies according to policy and procedure; maintain a clean, organized and safe environment in Endoscopy.
  • Assist in setting up the Endoscopy Unit with supplies and equipment; differentiate methods of scope disinfection, special endoscopes and procedures.
  • Anticipate and prepare for the needs of the physician and Endoscopy Team.
  • Assist with pre‑procedure care of the patient.
  • Assist the physician in performing endoscopy procedures.
  • Perform patient care duties as directed by the Registered Nurse/Physician, including:
    • Properly identify the patient using two qualifiers (e.g.,  name and birthday).
    • Prepare, check and monitor the function of endoscopy equipment.
    • Take and record vital signs; report abnormal values to physician and/or RN.
    • Clean and dress wounds as directed.
    • Discontinue intravenous infusions.
    • May inject dye through cannulas under the direct supervision of the Physician or RN.
    • Apply oxygen per mask or nasal cannula.
    • Identify medications and read medication labels appropriate to the situation.
    • Respond to Code Blue page and other emergency situations within the unit.
    • Apply monitoring equipment.
  • Assist physician with obtaining specimens, including:
    • Initiate requisitions; order lab work via the computer.
    • Understand and articulate name and location of specimen.
    • Deliver specimens to the laboratory in a safe, expedient manner.
  • Document the following:
    • Disposition of patient’s valuables.
    • Time patient enters procedure room.
    • Equipment/supplies used.
    • Vital signs.
    • Source and name of specimens and time to lab.
  • Perform a variety of technical functions, including:
    • Order and stock supplies and special equipment.
    • Check labels for expiration dates on supplies.
    • Order supplies and equipment repairs as needed.
    • Prepare sterile trays and fields.
    • Routine cleaning assignments, including decontamination of endoscopic equipment.
    • Infection control principles and practices are essential and mandatory.
    • Biological testing, chemical activation testing and documentation.
    • Assist with scheduling of patients.
    • Assist with charge documentation.
    • Assist with orientation of personnel.
Non‑Essential Functions
  • Perform all duties in a manner consistent with safe patient care and according to policy and procedures. Respect patient’s rights to privacy, dignity and safety.
  • Must be able to wear any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for complying with Standard Precautions (OSHA).
  • Contribute to unit projects and assists in trial and evaluations of new equipment/supplies and procedures.
  • Promote a positive work environment as evidenced by quality service and positive staff attitudes.
