Position Summary

The RN House Supervisor is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating patient care activities and nurse staffing to ensure quality care is provided to the patients/families. Responsible for the administration and supervision of all clinical departments in the absence of in-house hospital administrative personnel. Accountable for independently applying the problem-solving process in coordinating patient services. Serves as a clinical role model and resource person for staff.

Serves as a partner with the department leaders to assist in the process of staff development.

General Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Makes administrative decisions in the absence of Administration based on the interpretation of facts and evaluation of patient outcomes, regulatory standards and hospital policy; keeps the administrator on call / CNO informed regarding circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact.
  • Focuses on patient throughput; directs patient flow in ER; performs accurate and complete assessments; involves the patient/family in the plan of care; evaluates the effectiveness of care; ensures medications are safely and accurately administered and Pharmacy is accessed per hospital policy; ensures documentation is complete, accurate and timely.
  • Rounds on all patient units to ascertain condition of patients, evaluates staffing needs and provides support to caregivers; assists physicians with procedures; utilizes other departments to provide interdisciplinary care as appropriate.
  • Maintains safe staffing levels during shift and makes arrangements for appropriate staffing on next shift; documents employee call ins and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Participates and assists in the identification, planning, initiation, management, and facilitation of Quality and Performance Improvement activities to support organizational goals.
  • Performs all aspects of the position in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors; utilizes established hand-off communication protocols; monitors the security of the facility and takes appropriate action as necessary.
  • Initiates service recovery when warranted; addresses problems with work quality, issues between employees and other concerns in an effective and timely manner; acts as a role model; demonstrates flexibility and functions as a mentor allowing for growth and development of the team.
  • Serves as a link between front-line staff and upper management.
  • Complies with all established safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Licensure Requirements
  • Current IL RN License Required
  • BLS Required
  • ACLS Required within 6 months
  • NRP Required within 6 months
  • PALS Required within 1 year
  • TNCC Required within 1 year
  • De-escalation Training Required within 6 months of hire
Experience Requirements
  • Critical Care / Cardiac Care minimum 4 years Preferred
  • Supervisory minimum 2 years Preferred
Computer Skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Outlook
Additional Skills
  • Excellent ability to thrive under pressure and adapt to changes in assignment
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Capable of taking initiative to make decisions and is an advocate for change and improvement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, be professional, polished and articulate well
