Seasonal Maintenance Worker – Trails & Greenways

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Seasonal Maintenance Worker for the Trails & Greenways section of the Parks and Recreation Department to perform natural and paved trail and greenway maintenance. Activities include but are not limited to: trash collection, mowing, construction and maintenance of natural surface trails, concrete work, light construction projects, and amenity maintenance. Additional duties may be assigned such as leading volunteer groups, snow removal, and other emergency tasks.

May require night and weekend hours. Minimum qualifications include: high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a valid Virginia driver’s license.

This is a non-exempt position.

• Performs work in the completion of greenway and blueway maintenance and trail construction
• Knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including:
  Toro 5900, Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, weed eaters, edgers, blowers, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat, mini skid steer, chainsaws, trail work tools, and tractors
• Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day’s assignment
• Load/unloads materials such as soil, mulch, gravel, etc.
• Performs minor repairs of greenways, blueway, and trails
• Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal
• Follows established safety procedures
• Other duties as assigned

• Operates dump truck loads and unloads general dirt, timber, chemical, refuse and other materials
• Operates riding and push mowers cutting and trimming grass
• Operates tar distributor and patches holes in streets
• Operates chipper and cleans area of limbs
• Operates truck, transports and works with crew engaged in semi-skilled repair maintenance and custodial activities
• Performs the work of a laborer or semi-skilled laborer as assigned when not engaged as driver including rough carpentry and concrete work painting and related tasks

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• One to three months experience and/or training in trail building and maintenance, landscape and turf maintenance, construction or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions
• Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed

Paid leave is time off from work available for use by an employee upon approval by supervisor. The first 24 consecutive leave hours for any illness must be charged to paid leave with additional time charged to extended illness leave. Paid leave for employees of the city shall accrue as follows:

Extended Illness Leave: shall accrue at the rate of six (6) hours per month. Fire suppression employees shall accrue extended illness leave at nine (9) hours per month.
Funeral Leave: for family, up to three consecutive days.
Military Leave:
Twenty-one work days per Federal fiscal year.
Holidays:
The City provides 96 hours of annual paid holiday time.
Mental Health & Well-Being Leave:
