Description
The City of Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician IV to supervise and participate in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance and construction activities. The successful candidate will perform work in multiple skilled trades, assign and supervise the work of maintenance workers and technicians, discuss job requirements with and receive detailed instruction from supervisor, and inspect work in progress to assure conformance with instructions.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years experience and/or training in trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience. Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license, master-level licensure in an area of skilled trades, certification as a State Inspector, or attain Pesticide Commercial Applicator Certification.

Examples of DutiesSupervises and participates in the work of a crew of highly skilled, semi-skilled, and/or unskilled maintenance technicians and maintenance workers responsible for mowing and trimming over 400 acres of park properties, leaf mulching, applying herbicides, performing turf maintenance such as seeding, aerating and fertilizing as well as performing landscape maintenance tasks such as pruning, mulching and weeding. Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor, then assigns daily tasks to crew.
Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions and regulations. Must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of mowers and equipment, including Groundsmaster 580D, Ventrac, zero turn and walk-behind mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, dump trucks, box trucks, front-end loader, forklift, backhoe, bobcat and tractor. Must have the ability to read and prepare plans and detailed reports.
Must have the ability to perform word processing, record keeping and report preparation on a computer and effectively use basic office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones and mobile radios. Operates heavy and light equipment for snow/ice removal. Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years training and/or experience in turf and landscape maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit and the ability to obtain the Class B CDL license within 3 months of hiring. Must have the ability to obtain a Registered Technician spraying license within 6 months, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification in 3A and 3B within 18 months and a Fertilizer Applicator certification within 1 year of hiring.
Overview
Paid leave is time off from work available for use by an employee upon approval by supervisor. The first 24 consecutive leave hours for any illness must be charged to paid leave with additional time charged to extended illness leave. Paid leave for employees of the city shall accrue as follows:
