Position: Facilities Trades Professional- General/Downtown

The City of Roanoke is seeking a General Maintenance Technician to serve in the Facilities Management Division of the General Services Department. This non‑exempt position requires three to five years of experience in the related trades and will work as part of a skilled crew, sometimes independently.

Trade Descriptions Mechanical Division – Plumber
  • Repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and installs commercial plumbing and HVAC piping, including rainwater recovery, swimming pools, and decorative fountains.
  • Studies plans, drawings, and specifications to determine work requirements and sequences.
  • Assists supervisor with layout sketches, material lists, and time estimates.
  • Operates backhoe for the installation and repair of light utility piping; fits steel pipe systems and assists welder/fabricator.
  • Climbs ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Valid VA driver’s permit (Class A, B or C commercial license may be required).
  • Journeyman plumber license required;
    City will provide 18 months to obtain Virginia State Master Plumber Certification.
  • Backflow certification preferred;
    City will provide time for certification.
Mechanical Division – Electrician
  • Repairs, maintains, and installs wiring, motors, transformers, generators, lighting, appliances, and circuits in compliance with the NEC and local regulations.
  • Operates electrical testing equipment to locate malfunctions.
  • Studies plans, drawings, and specifications for repairs and installations.
  • Assists supervisor with layout sketches, material lists, and time estimates.
  • Climbs ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Valid VA driver’s permit (Class A, B or C commercial license may be required).
  • Journeyman electrician license required;
    City will provide 18 months to obtain Virginia State Master Electrician Certification.
Structural Division – Carpentry / Building Envelope / Roofer
  • Maintains roofs, windows, doors, siding, flashing, gutters, and exterior surfaces on City buildings.
  • Catalogs all City roofs and structures to develop maintenance schedules.
  • Supervises and participates in crew work, assisting with layout sketches and material lists.
  • Constructs or repairs office furniture, and performs concrete finishing.
  • Climbs ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Valid VA driver’s permit (Class A, B or C commercial license may be required).
  • High school diploma (or GED) and three to five years of trade experience preferred.
Welding Division – Welder
  • Performs MIG, TIG, flux‑core, or electrode welding and large equipment rigging.
  • Supervises crew members on installation and removal projects.
  • Inspects work to ensure conformance with instructions.
  • Climbs ladders/lifts as needed.
  • Two years of welding experience required; SMAW or GTAQ 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G or 6GR certification required.
  • Valid VA driver’s permit (Class A, B or C commercial license may be required).
HVAC Division
  • Maintains and repairs heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Assists Lead HVAC Technician with system design and training of staff.
  • May supervise an assigned work crew.
  • Climbs ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Journeyman HVAC license required;
    City will provide 18 months to obtain Virginia State Master HVAC Certification.
  • Valid VA driver’s permit (Class A, B or C commercial license may be required).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists.
  • Requisition s parts and materials for equipment repairs.
  • Works on special events, snow removal, and emergency tasks (nights, weekends, holidays as required).
  • Trains and instructs subordinates and follows safety rules and procedures.
  • Operates bucket truck; training will be provided if needed.
  • Assesses job hazards before beginning each task and places safety above all other requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May supervise a small work crew and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with City policies and applicable laws.
