Mechanical Division (Electrician)

The City of Roanoke is seeking an Electrician to work with the Facilities Division of the Department of General Services and Sustainability. This position repairs, maintains, and installs wiring, motors, transformers, generators, lighting, appliances, circuits, wiring and other electrical system equipment and components in compliance with the National Electrical Code and local regulations. The electrician will operate a variety of electrical testing equipment to locate and determine types of electrical malfunctions, study plans, drawings, specifications and work orders, and determine work requirements and the sequence of repairs and/or installations.

The role requires a minimum of a journeyman‑level electrician license. The City will provide 18 months to obtain a Virginia State Master Electrician Certification. A valid Virginia driver’s permit is required, and depending on assignment a Class A, B or C commercial driver’s license may be needed.

SUMMARY

Performs work in multiple skilled trades (mechanical, structural, HVAC, welding, sheet metal). Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance and construction activities. Requires a high school diploma or GED and three to five years of experience and/or training in the trades area assigned or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations to ensure work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
  • Discuss job requirements and receive detailed instructions from supervisor.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions; make and adjust work assignments.
  • Maintain accurate log sheets and checklists.
  • Assist with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures; enforce sound safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Requisition parts and materials used in the repair of equipment.
  • Inspect equipment for proper safety and ensure the truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day’s assignment (e.g., water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares).
  • Perform at minimum journeyman‑level trades work in carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding.
  • Must be able to climb/work on ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Train and instruct subordinates.
  • Follow safety rules/procedures and avoid known hazards in the work environment.
  • Review safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.
  • Place avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.
  • Will be required to operate out of a bucket truck; training will be provided if needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise a small work crew. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years of experience and/or training in the assigned trades area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
