The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician II on the Streets Team to serve in the Transportation Division of the Department of Public Works. This role will perform skilled work around the operation of heavy motorized equipment involved with roadway maintenance and repairs. Equipment used includes asphalt distributor, dump truck, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, large motor grader and various hand tools to complete assigned tasks.

Also makes repairs to alleys, road shoulders, medians, curbs and sidewalks. Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment. May be asked to operate independently involving street construction repair when the supervisor is absent. Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal and assists with emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Maintain accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License without an E endorsement or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment. Ability to obtain Tanker Endorsement (N) may be required within 12 months of employment.

Completion of other tasks and jobs supporting the division may be assigned.

Summary

Perform skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment
  • Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
  • When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators
  • Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
  • Operates truck, including automatic and manual transmission
  • Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment
  • May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment
  • Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets
  • Performs major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems
  • Repairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks
  • Performs work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings.
  • Performs some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders;

    and tuning motors
  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
  • May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
  • May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
  • Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.
  • Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.
  • Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.
  • Follows established safety procedures.
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
