Overview
Performs responsible technical and service work in the supervision of staff providing care and maintenance of stray and owner surrendered animals at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP). Oversees the preparation of animals for adoption and transfer to rescue partners. Supervises the kennel staff of the Center, including directing, evaluating, scheduling and daily kennel operations. Serves as a liaison between the Vet Clinic and the Animal Care Attendants to ensure animals are receiving timely vet care.
Maintains all required Virginia shelter code inspection information and ensures the shelter follows up-to-date regulations and policies. Ensures adequate inventory of food and kennel supplies. Coordinates training and certification of staff in performing vaccinations and euthanasia. Coordinates scheduling and recording of staff for rabies inoculations and titer tests. Coordinates occupancy levels to ensure space is available for adequate intake. Provides humane treatment of all animals at all times and ensures animal medical needs are quickly identified and addressed.
Ensures kennels and the Center s general areas are cleaned and sanitized using State of Virginia veterinarian standards. Receives animals and places them in the appropriate caging unit. Ensures animals are kept clean, dry and comfortable and given appropriate food and water intake for the particular species. Follows veterinarian procedures and provides required vaccinations. Assists in the preparation of animals for adoption and transfer to rescue when needed.
Regularly checks animals for signs of illness or injury and follows documentation procedures. Prepares the list of euthanasia of animals as needed and oversees the completion of the euthanasia list. Properly documents the euthanasia solution. Keeps current all facilities licenses necessary for the euthanasia of animals. Listed as the Responsible Party for the Board of Pharmacracy to maintain control and domain of all euthanasia drugs ntains current Board of Pharmacracy/Department of Drug Enforcement records for inspection.
Performs quarterly inspections to ensure all Virginia State standards are being followed. Maintains effective working relationships with all animal control personnel, animal welfare organizations, volunteers and staff. Communicates with local Health Departments to clear animals from rabies quarantine holds. Works with RCACP veterinarian to cover medical staffing shortages. Provides oversight to volunteers working in the Kennel.
Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred: Associate’s degree from accredited college or university.
ExperienceRequired: Significant experience working with animals and direct experience supervising the daily work of technical service staff.
Certifications/LicensesRequired: Must be certified to perform euthanasia of animals or able to obtain certification within one year of employment. Valid Virginia Driver’s License with good driving record.

Knowledge
:
Supervisory principles and practices. Knowledge of animal care tools, supplies and equipment. Computer skills to include ability to key forms, navigate through software, receive and send email and search internet sources.

Ability to instruct workers and volunteers to perform job tasks according to established protocols and procedures. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to document work and maintain records according to established procedures. Ability to gather facts and exercise discretion in daily decisions involved with facility operations. Ability to communicate established protocols and appropriately train Animal Attendants.

Additional RequirementsSubject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must maintain a neat professional appearance consistent with company policy. Due to the nature of this role, candidates must have a current rabies vaccination or be willing to obtain one upon hire at no cost, as mandated by Roanoke County. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
