The Acute Care Surgery Service (ACS) at Carilion New River Valley (CNRV) offers an exciting opportunity for an Advance Practice Provider (APP) to join our team. CNRV is a 110-bed acute care facility and Level III Trauma Center, providing modern medical ORs, state‑of‑the‑art technology, and multiple surgical and medical specialties. The ACS umbrella covers three divisions:
Trauma, Emergency General Surgery (EGS), and Surgical Critical Care (SCC). The CNRV ACS APP will work with both EGS and trauma services.

The Carilion ACS APP leadership structure is composed of APPs and focuses on optimizing and supporting the APP group to improve productivity, job satisfaction, talent utilization, and scope of practice. Distinct functions of the APP position include patient management, clinical decision‑making, bedside procedures (such as bedside incision and drainage, chest tube placement/removal, wound repair and management, drain management, central line placement, dialysis catheters, arterial lines), and teaching patients, families, and staff.

Other opportunities may include research, quality and process improvement, peer review committees, and shared governance.

Responsibilities:

  • Admissions, history and physicals; order and interpret tests; make preliminary diagnoses; treat injuries/illnesses; assist with surgical procedures; counsel patients and/or prescribe medication; discharges.
  • Provide care from the initial consult through the hospital stay, maintaining a strong patient- and family-centered focus.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including attending physicians, residents, other APPs, medical and APP students, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, case managers, social workers, consultants, and more, to deliver high quality, best practice, timely, cost‑effective care.
  • Manage complex social situations, plan safe and successful discharges, and ensure appropriate follow‑up to reduce readmission risk.
Physical Requirements (includes use of assistance devices as appropriate)

Physical:
Lifting less than 20 lbs.; up to 50-100 lbs.

Activities:

Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive), repetitive motion.

Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, reading, logical thinking.

Emotional: fast‑paced environment, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, able to adapt to frequent change.

What We Require

Education: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Experience: 0

Licensure/Certification: Current state Licensed Nurse Practitioner (LNP), DEA license, and Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required. AHA BLS-HCP certification required;
Advanced Life Support certification preferred. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.

Other: Able to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
