How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare
Neuro/Trauma Surgical Unit – This 28‑bed M/S unit is the primary unit for Trauma/Neurosurgery, Urology, and General surgery patients. The unit has a dedicated Neurosurgical ACP daily and serves as the alternate unit for orthopaedic surgery, hospitalist, and other medicine patients.
As a registered nurse, you are expected to consistently deliver the best in care and customer service while demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in each encounter with patients, their families, visitors, and one another. RNs assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages, using delegation and critical‑thinking skills to provide quality service through a team‑oriented, collaborative approach.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes for patients of all ages, appropriate to the service area.
- Complete age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments, document them, and use them to develop a plan of care.
- Collaborate with health‑care team members, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate an age‑specific interdisciplinary plan of care; revise the plan as patient status changes.
- Accurately administer and document treatments and medications for patients of all ages using automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
- Identify patient/family educational needs promptly and incorporate them into the plan of care, implementing and documenting them appropriately.
- Contribute to Carilion Clinic’s performance‑improvement activities.
- Consistently demonstrate the role of patient advocate, protector of patient rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development to care for patients appropriately.
- Determine and perform within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support evidence‑based, quality patient care and performance improvement.
- Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
- Plan strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
- Act as a role model for clinical practice with coworkers, students, and physicians; manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient‑care needs.
- Complete manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to established guidelines.
- Use problem‑solving methods to facilitate resolution of patient and personnel situations in the work area.
- Take an active role in orienting new employees.
- Provide feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
- Provide input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating in unit, hospital, and system activities that facilitate staff participation and decision‑making.
- Assist with providing education activities for the unit/department.
- Education: Graduate of a professional nursing school from an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
- Licensure/Certification: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
- Life Support: AHA BLS‑HCP required; may be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
- Other: Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).
