The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor for the Solid Waste Management Division who will perform difficult skilled work in supervision of a number of crews in collection of trash and recycling. Responsible for personal contact with new business owners, property managers, residents, DRI, event zone and the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the trash and recycling process is fully understood by all.

Will be responsible for supervising the Operations Group within SWM on a daily basis which includes monitoring the 1,100 physically challenged customers and assists in the absence of the other two supervisors. Must have good verbal and written skills, knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office, Excel and Powerpoint with ability to make presentations to groups of people, with three or more years of supervisory experience.

Examples of Duties SUMMARY

Performs difficult skilled work in supervision of a number of crews engaged in maintenance or construction projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees and delegates field supervision
  • Ensures project conformance to work plans and orders
  • Performs or assists in the planning, preparation, estimation, and design of maintenance and construction projects
  • Monitors internal projects and outside contractors for conformance to set standards and procedures
  • Coordinates and schedules equipment and work flow for maximum efficiency
  • Works with other City departments, business, agencies, and other governments concerning joint projects
  • Accounts for department inventory and ensures preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Provides training and instruction to subordinates as required
  • Prepares and submits detailed reports and records
  • Assists in the preparation of the department budget
  • Works on the project site and gives advice and assistance to crew
  • Receives and handles complaints and accident reports
  • May operate heavy and light equipment in snow removal
  • Assumes duties of Maintenance Superintendent as needed
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises several skilled and unskilled crews engaged in maintenance and construction operations within assigned department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
