Summary of Job
Performs responsible skilled work in supervising the daily operations within the Community Systems Operations. Oversees the operations of the wastewater treatment plants, water wells and tanks, as well as water distribution systems. Troubleshoots water and wastewater system problems. Informs management of repairs needed. Assists in preparing monthly operational schedules. Monitors inventory of chemicals and replacement parts. Oversees operations in the absence of the Community Systems Manager.
Graduation from high school/GED equivalent supplemented by course work in environmental studies/chemistry/sewage/water treatment/other related areas and three (3) or more years of related experience. Previous experience in supervisory role preferred. Class III Water and Wastewater license from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation for Waterworks and Wastewater Works.
- Directs and coordinates work of assigned employees.
- Takes active role in developing employees by establishing individual employee goals and objectives. Assures appropriate resources are available to obtain established goals and objectives.
- Makes recommendations to management on appointments and promotions within assigned area.
- Assures employee evaluations are complete and accurate and meet all requirements.
- Coordinates maintenance and repairs of plants, distribution and collection systems, lift stations, water wells and tanks, equipment and requisition of supplies, materials and related inventory.
- Assists and prepares monthly work schedule.
- Assists with preparation of reports to state and local authorities.
- Assists in the training of staff in operation of water and wastewater treatment processes and preparation for certification exams.
- Records readings from meters and instruments.
- Turns water service off and on or for non-payment of water bills at the request of customer service.
- Repairs leaks around meters by replacing washers, installing new meter connections, tightening bolts or other related methods as required.
- Investigates for no water, muddy water or other problems related to water quality.
- Investigates water pressure and low flow related problems at residential, commercial and with the distribution system.
- Investigate water main breaks and perform leak detection.
- Checks functionality of equipment at Treatment plants, Water facilities, and Lift Stations.
- Regulate and adjust motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other equipment as appropriate to meet changing operations conditions.
- Collects samples and makes routine tests as necessary.
- Inspects buildings and equipment, noting need for maintenance and repair work.
- Informs management of the need for major repairs.
- Coordinates and communicates with required entities both internal and external to the Authority.
- Keeps and maintains operational records.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Subject to twenty-four (24) hour call and weekend shifts as assigned.
Supervises assigned employees in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
