How You’ll Help Transform HealthcareAs a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Psychiatric Technician assists with ensuring the safety of adults and children with mental illness on an acute psychiatric hospital unit. Responsibilities include delivery of patient care, providing assistance with activities of daily living, secretarial support, leading goal/wrap‑up groups, and directing code secure activities.
Responsibilities- Assists with observing patients and reporting any unusual circumstances to licensed nurse.
- Organizes, prioritizes, and provides nursing care in accordance with unit standards.
- Completes admission/discharge process and documentation according to unit standards in chart/EMR.
- Greet, orient, and provide safety precautions to admissions within 15 minutes of arrival on unit.
- Answer call lights and telephones promptly; meet basic patient needs for assigned patients.
- Conduct patient safety rounds every 15 minutes or per unit policy.
- Performs activities of daily living and assists with meeting nutritional needs.
- Provide patient treatments as delegated such as EKGs, blood glucose testing, I/O, enemas, etc.
- Act as patient advocate, protect patients’ rights, and provide psychological/social/cultural support. Treat patients with respect and dignity. Use system resources to meet cultural and disability needs.
- Provide patients and families with appropriate information and care promptly.
- Organize and lead daily goal/wrap‑up groups. Report to licensed nurse any issues or concerns voiced or written in groups.
- Function independently with minimal supervision; manage patients with potential for aggressive or combative behavior; assist nursing staff with escalating patients; communicate effectively; lead and direct code secure activities; remain calm in crisis ensuring safety and well‑being of patients, visitors, and staff.
- Participate in quality management and performance improvement activities, identify opportunities for improvement timely.
- Participate in cost containment measures at unit level. Charge supplies appropriately and remove discontinued equipment properly. Use equipment in a cost‑effective manner per policy.
- Maintain safe, orderly, and professional environment; identify safety hazards and report them. Select and use proper equipment per policy and manufacturer recommendations.
- Perform clerical duties under supervision of licensed nursing staff.
- High school graduate or GED required.
- De‑escalation training must be completed within four months of hire and maintained thereafter.
- Must obtain AHA BLS‑HCP. Valid Virginia State Driver’s license required for transport.
- Experience with handling patients with explosive potential and/or escalating situations.
- Ability to function with minimal supervision and recognize need for direction in beyond‑scope situations.
- Ability to learn, participate as team member; clinical skills with child, adolescent and adult populations.
