Overview

Court Security Officer – Deputy Sheriff – Part Time. The City of Roanoke is seeking a Part-Time Deputy Sheriff to perform protective services work and serve as a bailiff in the courthouse/courtrooms of the Oliver W. Hill Justice Center. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the security, order, and decorum of courtrooms prior to and during court sessions.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Ensure the security of courtrooms prior to and during court sessions.
  • Transport and supervise the movement of prisoners to and from court or otherwise as required.
  • Ensure that offenders are fingerprinted and processed in accordance with departmental policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Handle emergencies, fire evacuations, bomb threats or other disturbances which may occur within the courthouse.
  • Ensure proper security, order, and decorum of prisoners, staff and visitors of the Oliver W. Hill Justice Center.
  • Monitor cameras and surveillance equipment maintained within the courthouse.
  • Provide information which is legally permissible to citizens, police officers and/or other criminal justice professionals.
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Comply with departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Obey all lawful orders of superior officers.
  • Participate in training programs/sessions as required.
  • To perform such other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Must have successfully completed basic jailor/court services/civil process academy and be DCJS Court Security Officer certified in Virginia OR attend court services training at a law enforcement training academy to obtain certification upon employment. Law Enforcement Officer certification preferred but not required. Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in social or police science desirable but not required;

or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community orally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to resolve conflicts.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables when working collaboratively toward a common issue or resolution.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Holds current Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Court Security Officer certification.
