Overview
The City of Roanoke is seeking an Accountant to maintain financial records, primarily in the area of financial reporting, journal entry preparation, projects associated with fixed‑asset routine transactions, payroll information for grants, and other related tasks. The successful candidate will prepare complex financial reports, perform reconciliations, analyze data, assist auditors, provide financial information to other departments, and support municipal business operations.
The position is exempt.
- Maintain financial records and perform reconciliations and fixed‑asset accounting.
- Perform accounting functions in accordance with GAAP and applicable federal and state legislation for assigned accounts.
- Compile and analyze financial information used in the preparation of complex financial reports.
- Maintain specialized databases and recommend upgrades or modifications to departmental information‑management systems.
- Prepare journal entries, financial reports, statements, and verify financial data for accuracy and currency.
- Assemble statistical and accounting data on request.
- Assist independent auditors as required.
- Assist other departments by providing information on financial matters.
- Research and provide financial data on request.
- Perform reconciliations, provide oversight and assistance in the operation of municipal business areas.
- Apply systematic collection action to collect delinquent accounts.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in accounting or a related field preferred.
- Three to five years of related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Public Accountant preferred.
- Language Skills
:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, financial reports, or governmental regulations. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints orally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups, or employees. - Mathematical Skills
:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. - Reasoning Ability
:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations that are only loosely standardized. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Regularly required to use hands (to finger, handle, or feel), reach with hands and arms; talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, sit, and occasionally walk.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include ability to adjust focus.
Noise level usually quite quiet.

Benefits Overview- Paid Leave
:
Time off available for use upon supervisor approval. First 24 consecutive hours for any illness must be charged to paid leave. Subsequent hours charged to extended illness leave. Accrual rates vary by years of service (see table). Extended illness leave accrues at six hours per month (nine for fire personnel). Funeral leave up to three consecutive days. Military leave: 21 work days per fiscal year.
